) D% ?# o( s: a) Y( D. A1 w# aSpecial Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a Peel Regional Police cruiser and a car collided on Friday night near Sheridan Centre, seriously injuring an eight-year-old boy., x) u. \' d' h8 h8 M) F& Q
( A5 m$ \; l I2 f& GSIU spokesperson Frank Phillips confirmed this afternoon that the provincial watchdog, which investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault to determine whether officers should be charged, is involved due to the severity of the boy's injuries.0 L3 P0 T5 G! k
The boy, who was initially taken to a local hospital and later transported to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, is expected to recover, said Peel Cst. Thomas Ruttan.
( T; Y5 a. {0 M- \+ R! {Meanwhile, police and the SIU are looking for witnesses to the Erin Mills Pkwy./Sheridan Park Dr. crash, which sent two other people, including a police officer, to hospital just after 9 p.m. The officer, who suffered minor injuries, was released from hospital.
/ \! @( g% ]5 \( LThe boy's mother, who was driving the other car, a Mazda, was also treated and released. 8 j8 p* g9 y7 N
Phillips said the SIU has yet to assign any subject or witnesses officers.
