Starting Monday, traffic around Square One Shopping Centre could get chaotic due to construction of the roundabout at the intersection with Square One Dr.
8 z2 G G1 {- W I" eHaving already suffered weeks of lane closures as preliminary curb work was being done, motorists traveling along Duke of York, north of Burnhamthorpe Dr., will now be forced to re-route to allow for the construction of the roundabout itself, which is adjacent to the new Sheridan College campus.

In anticipation of its opening, the City of Mississauga has prepared a pamphlet to explain to motorists and pedestrians how to navigate them safely. The primer, complete with a diagram, is currently being mailed to households.+ z+ T, W5 x! |3 @4 X
It instructs drivers to slow down when approaching the roundabout; yield to all those already in the roundabout before entering; merge with the traffic in the roundabout when safe; continue counter-clockwise; and exit using right signal as they approach their exit.

Experts believe roundabouts reduce the severity of collisions by 75 per cent. For one thing, they eliminate high-speed T-bone crashes that are often fatal at signalled intersections. Head-on collisions are eliminated. Roundabouts are virtually maintenance-free and don’t require traffic signals.
D+ ~* r+ l$ c“The City’s Downtown21 Master Plan has identified roundabouts as features that will help make the downtown vibrant and pedestrian friendly,” said Martin Powell, Mississauga's commissioner of transportation and works.

“They’re so full of advantages that we’re looking at them seriously for each intersection that needs a rebuild or other improvements such as new traffic signals, and there are dozens of these, said Jim Carrick, Peel Region’s manager of traffic engineering.& Q8 O# q2 x' z) K
It’s estimated eliminating traffic signals can save $150,000 plus $7,000 in annual maintenance costs. There already are Ministry of Transportation minimum standards to be met in designing and building them.; j t1 N2 s- g! N
Some United Kingdom studies have concluded that roundabouts are up to 90 per cent safer than signalled intersections. 5 u9 L9 P- S# k, r+ n# i) t. R8 i
