Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a Peel Regional Police cruiser and a car collided on Friday night near Sheridan Centre, seriously injuring an eight-year-old boy.1 Y' k) _, t- {- c: n: v* B

SIU spokesperson Frank Phillips confirmed this afternoon that the provincial watchdog, which investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault to determine whether officers should be charged, is involved due to the severity of the boy's injuries.
5 ?3 D0 [8 b5 z9 l: ~; ^The boy, who was initially taken to a local hospital and later transported to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, is expected to recover, said Peel Cst. Thomas Ruttan.
5 {8 J% d7 R' }+ H* Z) oMeanwhile, police and the SIU are looking for witnesses to the Erin Mills Pkwy./Sheridan Park Dr. crash, which sent two other people, including a police officer, to hospital just after 9 p.m. The officer, who suffered minor injuries, was released from hospital. + o9 i2 e: Y" |" g
The boy's mother, who was driving the other car, a Mazda, was also treated and released. ) X. p/ C; j/ k ` ]
Phillips said the SIU has yet to assign any subject or witnesses officers.
